Playground Zones are important—but fields?

City Council unanimously approved playground zone speed limits based on good research. 50% of injuries involving children and cars occur in these kinds of spaces on our streets.

The Alberta Traffic Safety Act provides a fairly broad interpretation of playground zones to include parks and sports fields. It does also allow some room for cities to define them more narrowly. Our administration, in implementing Council's policy direction, chose to use the broadest definition possible. I think this needs to be reviewed.

I am very firm in my support of playground zones where there are playgrounds and children's activity is typical. But in areas that are long fields, I think we have overreached with implementation.

I will have this reviewed soon after the election.

In the meantime, I have requested that no photo radar be used in these zones so that people can adjust to legitimate new playground zones and are unfairly ticketed in areas where an over implementation may have occurred.
